WINCHESTER, Va. – The No. 10/10 Shenandoah University baseball team opens up the 2017 NCAA York Regional Thursday evening with a 7:45 p.m. contest against Skyline Conference champion Maritime (N.Y.).
Coach Kevin Anderson's club, which is making its eighth NCAA Tournament appearance in the past nine years, comes into the game with a .324 team batting average and seven of the nine expected starters hitting at least .335.
Sophomore first baseman Luke Nussman, who has missed the past 12 games while recovering from mononucleosis, leads this group with a .469 average.
Nussman was one of three players, along with starting pitcher Colin Morse and designated hitter Jake Loew, to be named first team All-ODAC and he led the league in hitting with a .526 after in league play.
Morse, the ODAC Pitcher of the Year, figures to get the game one start versus the Privateers. He is 9-0 this season with 81 strikeouts and a 2.60 ERA in 79 2/3 innings pitched.
Maritime is 26-11 on the year and won the Skyline championship with a 14-3 victory over Mount St. Mary.
The Privateers are hitting .333 as a team with Brian McLaughlin hitting a team-high .455 in 132 at-bats over 34 games.
He is one of two active players for Maritime hitting over .400. Chris Deddo has a .409 average with 52 hits in 127 at-bats.
McLaughlin and Deddo combined for 16 home runs this spring.
Travis Bruinsma has made a team-high nine starts on the mound and has an 8-2 record with 41 strikeouts in 58 1/3 innings pitched. The freshman righty also has four of the squad's nine complete games.
The winner of Thursday's game plays the winner of the No. 3 Wheaton (Mass.) vs No. 6 Elizabethtown contest on Friday at 7:45. The losers of the Thursday games play each other in a 1:15 elimination contest Friday.
