WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's lacrosse team punched its ticket to the ODAC Tournament for the first time in program history with a 9-8 Senior Day win over Randolph-Macon Saturday afternoon.
The win for SU (9-6, 4-3 ODAC), just the second-ever over R-MC (8-8, 4-4) means that the Hornets have not only qualified for the six-team post-season tournament for the first-time ever, but can clinch the No. 5 seed with a win at Bridgewater next Saturday in the regular season finale.
In a game that featured four ties and four lead changes, a 3-0 Shenandoah run to finish the game gave the Hornets the first victory over Randolph-Macon since winning by the same 9-8 score on March 5, 2008.
Macon had won eight straight between the two programs in between Shenandoah wins.
Sophomore Ryan Schott scored the game-winner, tallying unassisted with 6:52 remaining.
Schott's goal, his only one of the way, capped a run in which the Hornets erased a two-goal deficit with three goals in 97 seconds.
The Yellow Jackets led 8-6 following an Alex Camilliere goal with 12:59 remaining and then SU went to work.
Andrew Shy (12-for-20 at the faceoff 'x'), won the ensuing draw and got the ball to Schott, who made one dodge before scoring the eventual game-winner.
The defense stepped in the final six minutes, not allowing a 'Jackets shot and causing one turnover.
SU ended the game on a clearing attempt with the ball in Connor Bishop's stick.
Shenandoah outshot its visitors 35-29 and won 12-of-20 faceoffs to offset a 28-20 Macon advantage in groundballs.
Ben Judy had 17 saves in the win.
"Today was huge for our program," head coach Tim Marshall said. "To make the conference tournament was our goal from day one this year. The team fought hard and earned this one."
