McKenzie Mathis, Kirstyn Arcata and Jordan Sondrol have all been selected as team captains for the 2017-18 women's basketball squad.

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University Head Women's Basketball Coach Melissa Smeltzer-Kraft announced the captains for her 2017-18 team Thursday morning.

Smeltzer-Kraft, preparing for her fourth season at the helm of the Hornets women's basketball program, will have senior Kirstyn Arcata along with sophomores McKenzie Mathis and Jordan Sondrol as co-captains this season.

For Arcata, it is her third year as co-captain.

"For the first time, we let the team members vote for captains," Smeltzer-Kraft said. "These three women were selected by their teammates and the coaching staff is eager to work hand-in-hand with this group."

Arcata is a returning three-year starter who averaged a team-high 10.8 points per game last season while starting 24 of 25 games she played in.

In the Hornets 82-73 ODAC Tournament first round victory over Virginia Wesleyan, Arcata had a season-high 28 points on 9 of 13 shooting from the field making a 7 of 10 3-pointers.

Mathis started 25 of 26 games she played in, missing only a non-conference game in December, and had a season-high 14 points versus Bridgewater on February 1.

Sondrol was one of the squad's top subs off the bench before earning a starting spot for the final four games of the season. She had a season-high 13 points versus Marymount on December 19.

The trio has a 3.77 average GPA with Mathis boasting a perfect 4.0 as an exercise science major. All three women were named Academic All-ODAC last season.

Smeltzer-Kraft, along with the three co-captains, will all be in attendance tonight at Glory Days for the annual basketball Tip-Off Reception. The event begins at 7 p.m. and is open to the public.
