RALEIGH, N.C. – Shenandoah University completed its USA South Conference softball slate Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 loss to Meredith.
Shenandoah (21-13, 11-7 USA South) was held to just one hit, a first inning infield single by Renoula Jones, in the loss to Meredith (13-20, 8-9).
The Avenging Angels got their winning runs in the sixth when designated player Leah Friedman beat out an infield single with two outs and then pitcher Arielle Stout homered to center.
The two hits were two of just three that SU pitcher Brooke Over (14-6) allowed on the day. Over struck out eight and walked three in the solid effort.
Down to their last at-bat, the Hornets got their first two runners on in the seventh, but a double play on a Morgan Coble fly to center ended any serious thoughts of a comeback.
Heather Sink, who led off the SU seventh with a walk, scored on that double play.
Stout (10-10) struck out six and walked three to earn the victory.
The loss drops Shenandoah into fifth place in the league and means that SU will play No. 4 seed Ferrum in the first round of the tournament at 11 a.m. on Friday.
