BURLINGTON, N.C. - No. 5 Shenandoah registered the first upset of the 2011 USA South Conference softball tournament with a 9-1 victory over No. 4 Ferrum Friday morning at Springwood Park.

Shenandoah (22-13) scored six runs in the third to take a commanding lead over the Panthers (24-12). SU then scored one in the fourth and two in the fifth to end matters early.

Junior Brooke Over (15-6) struck out five, walked four and allowed just two hits in 4.0 innings before turning it over to Misty Judd for the final three outs.

Ferrum scored its lone run off of Judd in the fifth on a walk, two singles and a Brittany Barlow groundout.

SU sent 10 women to the plate in that six-run third, with freshmen Heather Sink and Morgan Coble both contributing two-run singles to center.

Renoula Jones and Ashley Plaugher, with a single to second and a double to left, respectively, had the Hornets other RBIs in the frame.

Shenandoah had eight hits in the five innings, including two each by Plaugher and Coble.

Hannah Shoemaker (6-2), the FC starter, was 2 for 3 to lead her club at the plate. She allowed six runs on five hits and one walk in 2 1/3 innings pitched.

Notes: The win is the 150th of coach Marlena Kotynski's career.
