BURLINGTON, N.C. - Shenandoah University will play for its first-ever USA South Conference softball championship with a 4-1 victory over Christopher Newport Sunday afternoon at Springwood Park.
Shenandoah (26-14) once again rode the arm of junior Brooke Over to the win over the Captains (31-9).
Over (18-9) continued her dominating run at the tourney, allowing one run on six hits and striking out seven.
The victory is her fifth of the tourney.
The two teams will now play at 3:30 for the tournament title and accompanying bid to the NCAA Tournament.
This is the Hornets third trip to the championship round in the past five years, but the first time they have forced the 'if necessary' contest.
Shenandoah wasted little time in seizing the advantage over CNU, scoring three runs on three hits and one hit batsman in the top of the second.
Senior Renoula Jones had a two-run single one batter after classmate Jolisa Jones drove in Denise Mitchell with a double through the left side.
Both teams scored single runs in the fifth.
Over gave up two of her six hits in the seventh, but clinched the victory by inducing a pair of flyouts to left.
Renoula Jones led all players with a 3 for 4 contest.
