BURLINGTON, N.C. - The Shenandoah University softball team will be making its third USA South Conference Tournament championship game appearance after shutting out Greensboro College 8-0 in the loser's bracket championship Sunday morning.
Shenandoah (25-14) once again rode Jolisa Jones' bat and Brooke Over's arm to the win over the Pride (22-17).
Jones, who helped put SU into this morning's game by leading off the Hornets first with a solo home run last night against Meredith, did the same this morning against GC.
Jones' shot to center gave Over all of the offense she would need as the first team All-Conference pitcher continued her dominating tournament from the circle.
Over allowed just a third inning single to throw her second consecutive one-hitter and third consecutive shutout of the tournament.
Over also struck out five and walked two to improve to 18-7 on the year. In the five tournament games so far, Over is 4-1 with an 0.80 ERA, 28 strikeouts and just nine hits allowed in 26 1/3 innings pitched.
Shenandoah scored twice in the third, three times in the fourth and once each in the fifth and sixth to end the game early against the Pride.
Pinch hitter Kaitlin Robinson finished it off with a bases loaded single in the bottom of the sixth to Ashley Plaugher. Plaugher had led off the SU with a walk.
Jones paced the 11-hit attack with four hits while Catherine Pruiett had two hits and three runs scored.
The Hornets face regular season champion Christopher Newport in the 1:30 championship game. Should SU win that contest, the two teams will immediately play another contest for the right to represent the USA South in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.
