Over Punches Out Angels

BURLINGTON, N.C. - Senior Brooke Over tossed a complete game four-hitter Saturday morning to help the Shenandoah University softball team advance in the USA South Conference Tournament with a 2-0 victory over Meredith.

Shenandoah (22-16) scored one run in the third and another in the sixth to eliminate the Avenging Angels (27-13) from the 2012 tourney.

The Hornets now await the loser of the Christopher Newport/Greensboro game for a 2:00 elimination contest.

Over (12-11) allowed just one hit through the first six innings but had to work out of a bases loaded, one out jam in the seventh.

SU appeared to have won the game with an 8-3 DP on an Amanda White pop fly to short center, but the umpires reversed their original call and overturned the Morgan Coble catch.

Over then allowed another infield single to load the bases before getting a strikeout and a foul pop to catcher Denise Mitchell to end the contest.

Over struck out five and walked just one.

Sophomore Heather Sink drove in what proved to be the game winning run with a two-out single to center in the third.

Junior Ashley Crawford, who scored that first run, plated the insurance run with a triple down the right field line in the sixth. Jordan Wolford, who was hit by a pitch, scored all the way from first on the play.
