Softball Splits Again

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Shenandoah University softball team posted its fourth straight USA South Conference split Friday afternoon at Meredith College.

Shenandoah (19-12, 8-8 USA South) bounced back from a 12-4 loss in game one to earn a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.

Meredith (25-9, 11-5) erased a 3-0 deficit in the opener with two runs in the first and six in the second.

In game two, senior Brooke Over (9-8) tossed a complete game three-hitter to help SU salvage the split.

Over struck out 10, including the final hitter of the game, and walked just two.

Junior Denise Mitchell, who scored the initial run of game two for Shenandoah, drove in the winning run with a sixth inning fielder's choice.

Mitchell's groundball up the middle brought pinch runner Maggie Waters home from third base.

Lizzy Martin had led off the Hornets sixth with a walk and Waters, running for Martin, moved to second on an Ashley Crawford single and to third when Shatora Lane flew out to right.

Over then worked through a 1-2-3 sixth before allowing a pair of baserunners in the seventh. She then induced a pop out and a flyout prior to getting the game-ending strikeout.

Sophomore Morgan Coble had a three-run HR in the top of the first in the opener, but the Angels roughed up Jordan Wolford (6-2) for eight runs (just one earned) on six hits and one walk in 2.0 innings.

Both of the MC runs in the first and five of the six in the second were direct results of Shenandoah errors.

Coble was 3 for 3 and Mitchell 2 for 4 to lead the Hornet offense in game one.

SU plays its final two USA South Conference regular season games at Greensboro on Saturday.
