Royals Sweep Softball

WINCHESTER, Va. – Visiting Eastern Mennonite used a pair of strong pitching performances Wednesday to sweep an ODAC softball doubleheader from Shenandoah University.

The Royals (15-5, 3-5 ODAC) were 3-2 winners in the opener before shutting SU (6-14, 2-6) out 3-0 in the nightcap.

In game one, the two teams traded first inning runs before EMU scored twice in the third to provide itself with the game-winning runs.

Two of the three Royals runs were unearned as SU committed three errors in the contest.

Shenandoah cut the deficit in half by stringing together three hits in the sixth only to see Carrie Robinson eliminated in a rundown between third base and home following an attempted double steal with Janae Hester.

SU had the tying run in scoring position in the seventh following a Casey Webb double to center, but Eastern Mennonite starter Lauren Seale (6-2) was able to induce a game-ending fly to left.

Breanne Smith had two of the Hornets eight hits in the game.

Katherine Seidl (3-8) was the tough-luck loser – she scattered six hits and struck out four, but was victimized by three errors that led to two of the three runs against being unearned.

In game two, Sydney Reath (7-1) tossed a three-hit shutout to complete the sweep. EMU scored single runs in the second, third and seventh innings.

Seidl allowed the three runs (one earned) on seven hits and one walk against one strikeout.

Shenandoah is back in action on Thursday at Gettysburg.
