ASHLAND, Va. – No. 20 Randolph-Macon rallied to sweep an ODAC doubleheader from visiting Shenandoah University Friday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets (27-7, 10-6 ODAC) were 3-1 winners in game one before rallying for a 6-5 victory in the nightcap.
Shenandoah (10-26, 5-13) was one out away from earning an upset in game two only to see Macon tie the game with four runs in the seventh and win it in the eighth.
Leading 5-1 heading into the seventh thanks to one run in the second and four in the fifth, SU gave up the four runs on two hits, three walks and two hit batsmen in that fateful seventh.
The 'Jackets scored the game-winning run by sacrificing placed runner Jen Balcomb to third and then getting a Brandi Mulvena sacrifice fly to center.
Elizabeth Everette (3-7), who came on with two outs in the seventh, took the loss. She allowed one unearned run without giving up a hit.
Breanne Smith, Lindsay Corbin and Kristen Weadon all had two hits in the contest with Smith driving in a pair on a double to left center in the second and a single in the fifth.
Shenandoah had five hits in game one, including two by Casey Webb, but was held to just an unearned run in the fifth.
Webb, who led off that frame with a single to left, came home when Haley Koeninger's groundball to first was misplayed.
Everette took the loss in the opener as well, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits and one walk in 2.0 innings.
The Hornets complete their home slate on Wednesday with a 3 p.m. non-league doubleheader versus McDaniel.
