WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University softball team opened spring break play Sunday morning by splitting a non-league doubleheader versus Wilkes University.
Shenandoah (5-5) was a 9-2 winner in the opener before Wilkes (1-1) took advantage of seven Hornets game two errors to rally for a 10-9 victory. Four of the Colonels 10 runs in game two were unearned.
Sophomore Katherine Seidl (3-2) tossed a complete game five-hitter in game one. She gave up the two runs (one earned) on the five hits and one walk while striking out five.
Seidl worked from in front in all but the first inning as the Hornets scored four in the first, one in the third and three more in the fifth to build a commanding lead.
Sierra Beaty, Maryann Hollen and Morgan Henley all had two hits with Henley driving in three runs and Hollen two.
Beaty drove in the first run of the game with a single to left with Hollen following with an RBI single to center. Henley completed the four-spot by drilling a two-run double to center.
Kayla O'Connell also drove in a pair on a double to left in the fifth.
Hollen closed the book on the game one scoring for SU with a solo HR to left center.
SU scored the initial three runs of game only to see the Colonels score one in the fourth and five more in the fifth to take a 6-4 lead.
Shenandoah responded with its own five-spot (in the sixth) only to see Wilkes rally with four runs in the seventh to salvage the split.
Beaty, Hollen, Megan Wilk and Kristen Weadon all had two hits in the second game with Beaty and Henley both driving in two.
Carrie Robinson (1-2) took the game two loss after allowing seven runs (three earned) on 10 hits and three walks in 6 2/3 innings. She struck out one.
The Hornets are off until beginning play at the Virginia Wesleyan Beach Blast on Friday versus Hunter (N.Y.) College.
