WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University softball team wrapped up its 2018 season Sunday by dropping an ODAC doubleheader to Roanoke College.
Roanoke (24-16, 11-7 ODAC) was a 14-2 winner in the opener before holding on for a 4-3 win over Shenandoah (13-25, 3-15) in the nightcap.
In that game two, SU scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to cut its deficit to one, 4-3, but saw the Maroons escape by striking out pinch hitter Sammy Amateau with the tying run on second.
One pitch prior to Amateau going down on strikes, it appeared that she tied the game with a single off of Roanoke first baseman Becca Wenger's glove.
Unfortunately for the Hornets, Wenger was ruled to have originally touched the ball in foul territory, sending Morgan Henley back to second rather than across the plate with the tying run.
Henley had brought SU to within one by lacing a two-out double to center to score Allie Schey and Megan Wilk. Both Schey and Wilk had reached via error.
Henley was 2-for-2 with Schey and Wilk each getting one hit.
Carrie Robinson (2-4) took the loss. She allowed four runs on six hits and seven walks in 7.0 innings.
In game one, Shenandoah scored two runs in the first only to see Roanoke answer with three in the third, one in the fifth, two in the sixth and eight in the seventh.
Kayla O'Connell and Meghan Stout each had two hits with Schey and Amateau adding one each.
O'Connell and Henley had RBIs in the first.
Katherine Seidl (7-12) took the loss after giving up four runs on six hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings. She departed after being hit in the hand with a line drive in four batters into the fifth.
The 2019 schedule will be announced later this summer.
