Softball Drops Openers

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Shenandoah University softball team opened up its 2019 season Saturday with a pair of losses at the Spirits Invitational hosted by Salem College.

Shenandoah (0-2) opened with an 11-5 loss to Southern Virginia before host Salem took a 13-1, 5-inning decision in the second game of the day.

IN BRIEF

GAME ONE

After Shenandoah (0-1) scored a pair of runs in the top of the first, Southern Virginia (1-0) answered with two of its own in the bottom of the frame before scoring one run in the second and four each in the third and sixth.

Maryann Hollen had two of the Hornets five hits with Allie Schey, Autumn Beasley and Madison Clark all posting one.

Beasley drove in a pair of runs.

Carrie Robinson (0-1) took the loss in the circle after allowing seven runs on seven hits and six walks in 5.0 innings of work. She also struck out five.

GAME TWO

SU was held to three hits in the nightcap, one each by Schey, Carly Shaw and Madison Clark.

Megan Scalley (0-1) tossed the initial four innings in the circle and gave up 10 runs (seven earned) on nine hits and four walks.

Schey had the Hornets RBI on a sacrifice fly to center in the fifth.

UP NEXT

The Hornets take on Frostburg State and Brandeis on Sunday to conclude the tournament.
