Softball Sinks Anchormen

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University softball team got its first doubleheader sweep of the season Tuesday by taking a pair in non-league action versus Rhode Island College.

The Hornets (4-7) rallied for a 10-9 victory in the opener before completing the sweep with 13-0, five-inning victory over RIC (1-5) in the nightcap.

GAME ONE

The two teams swapped the lead four times, the last in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Shenandoah scored four runs on four hits to rally for the 10-9 victory.

Autumn Beasley put the Hornets on top to stay, lacing a bases loaded single through the left side to score Morgan Henley from third. Madison Clark then followed with a single up the middle to plate Maryann Hollen with what proved to be the game-winning run.

The late game heroics made a winner of senior Carrie Robinson (3-2) who came on in relief of Henley in the sixth. She allowed a run on three hits and two walks in 2.0 innings of work.

Robinson highlighted a four-run second with a two-run blast to left center while Madison Clark added a two-run double.

Taylor Glover had an RBI double in the fifth to plate pinch runner Sydney Viar.

The sixth inning rally started as the Hornets loaded the bases with nobody out for Hollen, and the first baseman delivered with a two-run single through the left side to tie the game at 8-8.

Beasley and Clark followed with the hits to secure the victory.

Clark and Meghan Stout both had three hits with Robinson going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

GAME TWO

Shenandoah jumped all over the Anchormen in game two, scoring three runs in the first and 10 in the second on its way to a 13-0, five-inning victory.

The Hornets scored those 10 runs in the second before making an out and both Hollen and Sierra Beaty hit home runs, the former a two-run blast and the latter a grand slam to complete that 10-run outburst.

Stout, Beasley, Robinson and Morgan Henley all had two hits each with Beaty and Henley both driving in four runs.

Robinson got her second win of the day by scattering three walks and one hit in three innings of work. Megan Scalley pitched the fourth and fifth to close out the victory.
