WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics unveiled its RED Team logo package Friday afternoon.
Â
The 18-person
Racial Equity and Diversity team, which was created earlier this summer and is made up of student-athletes, coaches, and athletics department administrators as well as campus personnel, had the opportunity to view and approve the logos earlier this week.
Â
Skye Dillon, founder of
Skye Design Studios, designed the suite of logos.
Â
The work is an extension of the graphic identity that Dillon designed for the athletic department in 2015. Since that time, Dillon has designed logos for the university's Club Sports and Intramurals programs in addition to the E-Sports program.
Â
The primary mark features a shield design, evoking both the university's shield mark and the athletics department primary and secondary marks. Inside of the shield, all five athletics colors (athletics red, university red, navy, grey, and white) represent diverse populations and surround the department's hornet secondary mark rendered in negative space.
Â
Along with the shield, the primary mark is completed with text using the athletic department's typeface.
Â
The shield icon can be used as a standalone mark and department officials plan to take advantage of the new NCAA regulations concerning social justice messaging to add the icon, along with the hashtag, #TogetherWeFly, to team uniforms.
Â
This addition will be undertaken as the university replaces uniforms on its previously determined schedule.
Â
Additionally, the RED team has tertiary marks and wordmarks that mimic marks used by the department's 22 athletics programs.
Â
"I am so happy with how the logo turned out," assistant athletics director for marketing and promotions
Jessica Porter said. "Skye was great to work with – he understood the message we were trying to convey immediately and came up with a great representation of the RED Team mission."
The RED Team can be followed on both Twitter and Instagram at @SUHornetsRED.
