Marlins Sweep Softball Series

VWU Wins Quarterfinal Round Series with 8-0 and 6-0 Wins

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Top-seeded Virginia Wesleyan ended Shenandoah University's softball season Saturday by sweeping the first two games of the best-of-three ODAC Tournament quarterfinal round series.
 
The Marlins (33-5-1 and ranked No. 2 in the nation), were 8-0 winners in the opener before closing out the series with a 6-0 victory in game two.

GAME ONE

VWU scored five runs in the first and three more in the fourth to take an 8-0 lead and end game one after five innings.
 
Shenandoah (11-21) was held to just one hit, an Alison Thompson single to right with one down in the third.
 
Hanna Hull (16-3) struck out five in four innings of work to add to her NCAA-record win total. She retired the Hornets in order in the first, second, and fourth.
 
Megan Scalley (3-10) took the loss. She allowed five runs on four hits and two walks in 2/3 of an inning. Morgan Henley pitched the final 3 1/3 and gave up three runs on five hits.

GAME TWO

Virginia Wesleyan completed the sweep by scoring one run in both the first and sixth, along with two runs each in the fourth and fifth, to win 6-0.
 
Shenandoah was held to five hits in the loss. Kamryn Kelly had a single to left in third, Nikki Stone and Taylor Glover infield singles in the fifth and sixth, respectively, Sammy Amateau a single up the middle in the sixth, and Morgan Henley a single to right in the seventh.
 
Kayla Stephenson (7-8) went the distance in the circle and allowed the six runs on 10 hits and three walks while striking out one.
 
Emily Seale (16-2) got the win for the Marlins. She tossed the complete game shutout and scattered five hits while striking out five.

UP NEXT

This completes the 2021 season for the Hornets. The 2022 schedule is slated to be announced this summer.
