WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University wrestling team opened up conference duals with a 26-19 victory over Southern Virginia Wednesday night. After dropping the opening weight class, and in an early deficit, the Hornets battled back with five straight victories to take a 20-4 lead. With Southern Virginia battling back, the Knights won three straight matches to make it a 20-19 match. Down to the heavyweight weight class,
Rives Hargis secured the pin and locked up the opening dual for the Hornets. Shenandoah got pins from
Hunter Ballantine and
Rives Hargis, while
Heath Burks and
Brendan Orr secured major decision wins, while
Sean Rinebolt and
Cannon Long secured the other two wins by decision.
RESULTS
125 weight class presented by Delta Contractors;
Anakin Burks fell by a major decision to Matthew Papa to put the Hornets behind 4-0.
133 weight class presented by Morgan Stanley;
Heath Burks got the Hornets on the board and tied the match with a major decision, 15-4 over Francisco Ramirez.
141 weight class presented by Shenandoah RTC;
Sean Rinebolt secured a 3-0 decision over Richie Kulessa.
149 weight class presented by The Valley Chorale;
Hunter Ballantine won by fall in the first round over Porter Kinne.
157 weight class presented by Stanley's Market;
Brendan Orr dominated Mason Smith in a 14-1 major decision.
165 weight class presented by Negley Water;
Cannon Long secured the 10-4 decision over Noah James.
In the 174 weight class,
Jalen Cornelius kept the match close, but fell by decision, 5-2 to Tyson Hoopes.
Dylan Wiegert (184) and
Cotton Yelton (197) both fell by fall as the Knights were only down 1 team point heading to the final bout.
Heavyweight class presented by Gray Construction;
Rives Hargis pinned Porter Trapp in the first round in front of his home bench to secure the win for the Hornets.
