Bretton Butler returned to Shenandoah as an assistant athletic trainer in the fall of '23, where she plays a key role in ensuring the health and well-being of the university’s student-athletes. With a robust educational foundation and diverse clinical experience, Bretton is dedicated to providing exceptional care and support for athletes across various sports.
Butler earned both her Master of Science in Athletic Training and Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Shenandoah University. Her academic excellence was recognized with several honors, including the Athletic Training Service Award and the Liberty Spirit Award. Additionally, Butler consistently achieved Dean's List status throughout her studies.
Butler brings a wealth of hands-on experience to her role at Shenandoah. She completed an externship at Virginia Commonwealth University, where she worked closely with the sports medicine team to provide individualized treatments and rehabilitation programs for athletes. Her responsibilities included implementing sport-specific return-to-play progressions, collaborating with physical therapists and doctors, and utilizing therapeutic modalities like e-cupping and Hivamat to enhance treatment outcomes. Butler also gained valuable experience in injury prevention, budgeting, and inventory management during her time at VCU.
Prior to her work at VCU, Butler completed an externship at Liberty High School in Bealeton, VA. There, she provided emergency care, developed and implemented rehabilitation programs, and worked closely with a multidisciplinary team to ensure the best outcomes for student-athletes.
In addition to her athletic training experience, Butler has served as a Veterinary Assistant at the Companion Animal Clinic in Gainesville, VA, since December 2020. Her responsibilities include monitoring animals post-surgery, administering medications, and providing care during veterinary procedures. Her work in veterinary care demonstrates his strong attention to detail and commitment to the well-being of those under his care.
Butler is deeply involved in her community and has participated in various volunteer activities, including reading to children at Quarrels Elementary, coaching with the SCFC Elite Soccer program, and assisting with relief efforts for Hurricane Sandy victims. She has also been actively engaged in Shenandoah University's community through events like the Color Me Rad 5k Run and the Special Olympics.
At Shenandoah University, Butler is dedicated to advancing the health and performance of student-athletes. Her approach to athletic training combines evidence-based practices with a compassionate and individualized care philosophy. Bretton’s diverse background and passion for athlete care make her a valuable asset to the Shenandoah University athletic department.
