Maylasia Simmons joined the Shenandoah athletic training staff in June of 2024, where she brings a wealth of knowledge and hands-on experience in sports medicine to the university’s athletic department. With a strong educational background and extensive clinical experience, Simmons is committed to providing top-tier care and support to student-athletes.
Simmons earned both her Bachelor of Science in Education, Kinesiology, and her Master of Science in Athletic Training from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. During her time at UVA, she distinguished herself by receiving the prestigious Stuart Flanagan Athletic Training Award and conducting original research on anxiety and depression in student-athletes. She also played a pivotal role in creating and implementing a life-saving Emergency Action Plan (EAP) for Peachtree Baseball, which she demonstrated through a live simulation in collaboration with Western Albemarle Rescue and other emergency services.
Simmons has gained valuable experience through various athletic training roles, including her work with the University of Georgia Football program, University of Virginia Field Hockey, and William Monroe High School. At the University of Georgia, she mentored and oversaw MSAT students, created and implemented rehabilitation programs, and led a quality improvement project to enhance the efficiency of the athletic training facilities. Her time at William Monroe High School involved developing customized mobility and recovery programs for sports teams, and facilitating effective communication with parents and coaches regarding injury details and treatment plans.
In her previous roles at the University of Virginia, Simmons provided critical first aid services, organized patient logs, and collaborated with a multidisciplinary team to manage the care and rehabilitation of athletes. Her experience spans a wide range of sports, including football, swim and dive, and field hockey, where she has been involved in everything from injury prevention to the application of protective devices and rehabilitation.
Simmons is also an active member of the Student Athletic Training Association, where she serves as Vice President, and the Kinesiology Club at UVA.
