Philip Betterly joined the Shenandoah University athletic staff as an Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach in January 2024. In this role, he oversees the development and implementation of strength and conditioning programs for various sports, including baseball, softball, women's lacrosse, tennis, golf, field hockey, and men's & women's basketball. Betterly brings a wealth of experience in athletic training and coaching, particularly in baseball and pitching development.
Before joining Shenandoah, Betterly served as the Director of Throwing/Pitching Development at Primal 1 Baseball Player Development in Gaithersburg, MD, where he specialized in creating tailored training programs using advanced movement assessments and technology. His expertise in biomechanics and player development has made a significant impact on the athletes he has worked with.
Betterly's coaching career began as an Assistant Baseball Coach at The University of the South, where he played a pivotal role in recruiting, fundraising, and developing the team's pitchers. He also contributed to the team's strength and conditioning program and managed game day operations for Field Hockey. His leadership helped set a school record for wins in 2019.
As Head Coach of the Woodstock River Bandits in the Valley Baseball League, Betterly demonstrated his ability to lead a team both on and off the field, earning the 2013 Valley Baseball League Manager of the Year award.
Betterly holds a Master's degree in Education with a concentration in Administration and Supervision from Frostburg State University and a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education with Teacher Licensure from Methodist University. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and is certified in First Aid/CPR/AED.
Betterly's diverse background in coaching, education, and player development makes him a valuable asset to the Shenandoah University athletic department. His commitment to athlete performance and holistic development continues to drive success across the university's sports programs.
