Hornets Dominate in 35-20 Victory

DANVILLE, Va. – The Shenandoah University football team earned its third victory of the 2001 season Saturday afternoon with a 35-20 Dixie Conference win at Averett University.
 
Shenandoah (3-5, 2-3 Dixie) jumped all over the Cougars (2-5, 0-4) for the initial 35 points of the contest to win for the second consecutive time over AC.
 
The Hornets rolled up 430 yards in total offense, 326 on the ground, in posting the win.
 
Sophomore Anthony McGhee, who scored the second touchdown of the game at the 3:47 mark of the second, led all players with 94 yards rushing on 18 carries.
 
Quarterback Wayne Hogwood ran for scores of six and one yards while freshman Richard Hodge capped the SU scoring for the day on a 47-yard scamper 2:24 into the final stanza.
 
The Shenandoah defense held Averett to 92 yards rush and just 222 overall; the vast majority of this yardage (180 yards) came in the fourth quarter as the Hornets substituted liberally with a five-touchdown advantage.
 
Eddie Freeman had a team-high nine stops for Shenandoah.
