WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah University celebrated the opening of its on-campus football stadium in style Saturday night with a 37-6 non-league victory over Gallaudet University.
Â
Playing on-campus for the first time since 1967, 2930 fans packed Shentel Stadium to see the Hornets (1-2) dominate in all phases of the game over Gallaudet (0-2).
Â
SU ran for 391 yards, held the Bison to just 99 yards in total offense and held the ball for more than 34 minutes on its way to the blowout victory.
Â
Only a 92-yard fumble recovery for TD prevented Shenandoah from pitching what would have been the second shutout in its short program history.
Â
Coach Walter Barr's club scored two touchdowns in each of the first two quarters and led 35-0 before Gallaudet had that scoop-and-score with 5:14 left in the third.
Â
An Anthony McGhee 61-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter provided enough offense for SU to take the victory; McGhee led all players with 109 yards rushing on just eight carries.
Â
Dennis Robart, who had 76 yards on 18 carries, scored the hosts' final touchdown on a one-yard-run at 11:53 of the third.
Â
Quarterback Wayne Hogwood ran for one TD and passed for another. He finished the night 2-for-4 for 28 yards through the air and ran for another 21 yards on four carries.
Â
Gregg Anderson had the lone interception of the game and had three solo tackles.
