Women Drop Dixie Opener

WINCHESTER, Va. - The SU women's basketball team was unable to carry the momentum it gained at the end of the first semester into the second, falling to Dixie opponent Christopher Newport Wednesday evening, 73-42. 

The Hornets (4-4, 0-1) gained the initial lead when junior Katie Woods (Winchester, Va./Sherando) hit a jumper from the elbow twelve seconds into the game but that turned out to be the only lead of the game for SU as the Lady Captains (8-3, 1-0) poured in 15 unanswered points to and take a 15-2 lead with 12:08 left. 

CNU expanded its advantage to 33-15 by the break and cruised to the easy victory. SU was unable to make a comeback in the final 20 minutes as they were held to just 7 for 29 shooting (24.1 percent) from the field while CNU continued to pull away and gained as much as a 34 point lead with less than five minutes to play. 

Woods led the hosts with had 10 points on 5-9 shooting and senior Jenny Driver (Staunton, Va./Fort Defiance) came off the bench to add nine. 

The Lady Captains had three in double figures; Tomorrow Lofton with 20 points, Tia Moore 16 and Jen Harrell 14 points. 

The Hornets travel to Danville on Saturday for a Dixie Conference contest against Averett College. Game time is 2:00.
