DANVILLE, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team evened its Dixie Conference record at 1-1 Saturday afternoon with a 59-52 victory over Averett University.
SU (5-4, 1-1) took its time in sending host Averett (0-11, 0-2) down to defeat. After taking a 9-1 lead by the 14:13 minute mark, the Hornets saw AU take an 11-9 lead as the Hornets went on a scoreless drought for the next 6:11.
The two teams then wrapped three lead changes around four ties before Shenandoah finally took the lead for good at 17-16 with 5:46 left in the first. A 13-5 run over the final five minutes sealed it.
The visitors continued this scoring run to start the second; Coach Kathy Orsini's club extended its advantage to 15 points by the 17 minute mark and cruised to the seven-point triumph.
Freshman Dee Fisher (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) and sophomore Jenny Gray (Sumerduck, Va./Liberty) both had 11 points in the victory while junior Katie Woods (Winchester, Va./Sherando) added 10. Fisher also added a team high nine rebounds and four assists.
