WINCHESTER, Va. - The SU women's volleyball team won two of three matches Saturday afternoon as it hosted a USA South Quad Match with Methodist and Peace colleges. SU (9-17, 6-5) opened the day with a 3-1 (28-30, 32-30, 30-19, 30-22) win over Methodist and then came back to sweep the Pride 3-0 (30-19, 30-21, 30-26).
Unfortunately, SU could not get a win in the final match of the day as Methodist came back to win a match rescheduled by Hurricane Isabel 3-1 (30-23, 30-28, 19-30, 30-24).
In that opening match, SU stormed back from the opening game defeat to sweep the final three games. Senior Lori Serrano (Jacksonville, Fla./North Florida) and sophomore Jenny Gray (Sumerduck, Va./Liberty) led both offensively and defensively with 16 kills each and 19 and 14 digs, respectively. Junior Hannah Williams (Salem, Va./Glenvar) also played well with 12 kills and 14 digs.
That match seemed to propel the Hornets in the Peace match as the hosts took just 1:25 in gaining the season sweep over the Pride (5-23, 2-12). Senior Tara Russell (Williamsport, Md./Hagerstown CC) led the offense with 13 kills Serrano continued to impress with 16 kills and a match high 19 digs.
Serrano once again led the offense in the nightcap; she had 14 kills and a game high 19 digs. Russell and Gray each had 11 kills.
