WINCHESTER, Va. - The SU men's soccer team dominated everywhere but the scoreboard Tuesday afternoon as Southern Virginia ended the Hornets regular season with a 1-0 non-conference victory.
SU (8-6-2) outshot Southern Virginia (11-8) 11-5 for the game but saw the Knights take the victory when Kris Diggers headed home a Sam Patterson volley in the 34th minute.
The Hornets had numerous excellent chances to score, including a penalty kick by James Jackson (Chesapeake, Va./Tallwood) early the contest, but were continually turned back by a packed in SVA defense. Jackson was awarded the PK when he was taken down in the box in the 12th minute.
SU keeper Kyle Hodges (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) made two saves in the loss.
Shenandoah is now off until the USA South Conference Tournament on November 7 and 8. The Hornets will most likely be the No. 3 seed and will face second seeded Greensboro in semi-finals Friday afternoon. Game times at tournament host Christopher Newport will be announced by Monday.
