NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Christopher Newport University women's basketball team used a 12 point spurt midway through the first half Wednesday evening to erase an early Shenandoah lead and key a 73-49 Dixie Conference victory.
Shenandoah (8-8, 3-5) led 7-2 in the first three minutes but saw CNU (13-6, 6-2) take a 14-7 advantage by the 11:39 mark. SU was able to cut the deficit to four on the strength of three points from Dee Fisher (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) only to see the Lady Captains answer this mini-outburst with a 21-7 run over the final 10:49 to take a 35-17 lead by halftime.
Fisher, the Dixie Conference Rookie of the Week for the last two weeks, had six points and three steals to lead the visitors at the break. Heidi Miller and Jen Harrell countered for Christopher Newport with 13 and 11, respectively.
Poor shooting hampered any thoughts of a Shenandoah comeback; the Hornets shot just 17 for 69 (24.6 percent) for the game and also turned the ball over 22 times.
Fisher had a team high 17 while Katie Woods (Winchester, Va./Sherando) added 10 with eight rebounds.
