WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's soccer team kept its hopes alive for a USA South Tournament berth Saturday afternoon by battling Ferrum College to a 0-0 tie.
Shenandoah (5-9-2 overall, 0-2-2 USA South) is currently seventh in the league, one-half game behind Averett for the sixth and final tournament spot. Should the Hornets defeat either Methodist or winless Peace next weekend, SU will be a half-game in front of AU and in strong position to qualify for the tournament for the first time ever.
Saturday's game with Ferrum (3-7-2, 2-2-1) was close throughout as the two team battled to their second tie in as many seasons. Shenandoah took eight of the game's 12 shots, but FC keeper Elizabeth Haines came up big with four saves.
Haines' counterpart, Lauren Elliott (Lynchburg, Va./EC Glass) moved into second place on the season shutout list by recording three saves in her seventh blanking of the season. Elliott is currently two shutouts from the all-time record set by Shelby Berkheimer in 1997.
