RALEIGH, N.C. - The Shenandoah University women's soccer team picked up its first conference win of the 2004 season Sunday afternoon with a 5-0 victory over Peace College and likely qualified for its first post-season tournament in the process.
Shenandoah (6-10-2 overall, 1-3-2 USA South) is now ahead of both Averett and Peace in the race for the sixth and final conference tournament spot. SU has one league game left - at home next Saturday against league leader CNU, but barring an Averett win over NC Wesleyan the Hornets are into the tournament for the first time ever.
SU got the win over Peace (0-13, 0-6) with a strong five-goal effort. Sophomore Megan Ross (Harrisburg, Pa./HACC) got the game winner off of a Sammy Houchens (Crozet, Va./Western Albermarle) assist in the 31st minute.
The Hornets then added goals in the 41st, 59th, 67th and 87th minutes to complete the rout. Lauren Carpinello (Spring Lake Heights, N.J./Mansquan) and Tiffany Johnson (Stephens City, Va./Sherando) each had a goal and an assist.
Keeper Lauren Elliott (Lynchburg, Va./EC Glass) two saves to pick up her eighth shutout of the year.
