WINCHESTER, Va. - Christopher Newport University scored first and last Wednesday afternoon to sneak out a 2-1 USA South men's soccer victory over host Shenandoah.

No. 9 in the South Region CNU (8-3-1 overall, 3-0 USA South) got a Galen Hall goal in the 23rd minute and a Billy Lucas tally with just under eight minutes to play to send SU (4-5-1, 1-2) down to defeat.

Lucas' goal came after Hornets keeper Chris Peter (Chantilly, Va./Northern Virginia CC) was called for a handball just outside the 18-yard box. Lucas took the ensuing direct kick and rocketed his shot off the crossbar and just over the goallline.

Hall scored in the same way; his first half shot from just outside the 18 dipped about six-yards from the goal and glanced off the crossbar before Peter could get a hand on it.

Shenandoah tied the game in the 77th minute when Mohamed Toure (Lorton, Va./Robert E. Lee) took a through pass from Alfred Smith (Alexandria, Va./Annandale) and converted the breakaway.

The game was very physical; 30 fouls were called in addition to four yellow cards being issued.

Peter and Captains keeper Brian Shumate each made four saves. CNU outshot SU 10-8.
