Volleyball Falls to League Leader

WINCHESTER, Va. - League leading Christopher Newport University kept its perfect USA South Conference volleyball record intact Tuesday evening with a 3-0 victory over host Shenandoah.

Christopher Newport (22-4, 8-0 USA South) swept the Hornets (5-16, 0-8) for the second time this season. The Lady Captains jumped out to the early lead with a 30-19 victory in game one, took game two 30-21 and then squeaked out a 30-28 victory in the third and final game.

Shenandoah was tied in game three as late as 27-27 and got the serve back down 29-28, but saw Brittany Collins clinch the match with a kill off of a Jessie Gwaltney set.

Sophomore Michelle Chandler had eight kills for the hosts while classmate Jennifer Thompson added seven. Freshman Catherine Beuerle chipped in 10 digs to go along with her team high 18 assists.

The final kill gave Collins a match high nine for CNU. Liz Bush added eight and Jenna Williams led the Lady Captains defense with 11 digs.
