Volleyball Gains Season Sweep Over Squirrels

STAUNTON, Va. - Shenandoah University gained its first volleyball sweep of the 2005 season Wednesday evening with a 3-2 victory over host Mary Baldwin College.

SU (7-19) won games one and two, 30-24 and 30-27 before the Squirrels (12-14) came back to win games three and four 30-27 and 30-18. Shenandoah then prevailed 15-13 in the decisive fifth game.

Sophomore Jennifer Thompson led the visitors on both offense and defense with 21 kills and 21 digs. Classmates Michelle Chandler and Alex Hamlin added 16 and 12 kills, respectively, with Chandler also chipping in 14 digs.

Hamlin was tops at the net with five total blocks (four solo).

Freshman Catherine Beuerle had 42 assists to go along with 20 digs.

The Hornets begin a three matches in 24 hours schedule Friday night with a home match against NC Wesleyan. This USA South Conference tilt begins at 7:00.
