NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's soccer team nearly pulled off its biggest upset of the 2005 season Tuesday evening in the USA South Conference Tournament quarterfinals, but third seeded Christopher Newport escaped with a 2-1 double-overtime victory.
CNU (12-6) got the golden goal in the 104th minute to turn back the Hornets (6-10). The Captains had defeated Shenandoah 9-0 on October 5, but needed the overtime tally Tuesday to advance to the tournament semi-finals.
Christopher Newport will face No. 2 seed Greensboro in Friday's semi-finals at NC Wesleyan.
The Captains got the initial goal against the Hornets on a Michael Caro tally in the 34th minute, but SU got the equalizer 32 minutes later when freshmanÂ

With six minutes remaining in the second and final overtime, Kenny Huttman converted a feed from Kyle Allan and Caro to end the contest.
CNU outshot Shenandoah 19-9 and had all seven of the game's corner kicks.
