WINCHESTER, Va. - Fifth seeded N.C. Wesleyan scored a pair of goals around the halftime Tuesday afternoon to upset No. 4 Shenandoah University in the USA South Conference Women's Soccer Tournament quarterfinals.
Wesleyan (6-8-2) scored unassisted goals in the 44th and 46th minutes to eliminate Shenandoah (10-8-1). The Lady Bishops now move on to take on top seeded Christopher Newport in Friday's semi-finals at CNU.
Freshman Buffy Casto gave NCWC a lead it would not relinquish with her unassisted goal with just 1:13 to play in the first. Casto took advantage of an SU miscue in the back to steal the ball and rip a shot into the upper right hand corner of the net from 15 yards out.
The second half had barely started when Casto's classmate, Rachel Rosenbarker, gathered in a loose ball off of a Wesleyan corner kick to knock home the all-important insurance goal.
SU outshot the Lady Bishops 7-5, but NCWC keeper Bryanne Godfrey stopped all three shots on goal.
