Mary Washington Runs by Women

WINCHESTER, Va. - No. 24 in the nation University of Mary Washington used a strong start Monday night to down host Shenandoah 88-69 in non-conference women's basketball action at Shingleton Gymnasium. 

Mary Washington (4-0) made 16 of its 34 first-half shots to jump out to a 42-29 halftime lead over the Hornets (0-3). While UMW shot 47.1 percent before the break, SU was held to an 8 of 25 (32.0 percent) performance.

Shenandoah opened the game with a Cassie Womack turnaround jumper off of an Alicia Sanders assist, but this would be the only lead that the hosts would hold all night.

The Eagles answered with a Liz Hickey layup less than a minute later, and after grabbed the lead for good on a Debbie Bruen jumper in the paint at the 18:22 mark.

Mary Washington took its first double-digit lead with 11:09 to play before eventually extending it to 16 with 2:12 showing.

The second half brought more of the same as the visitors never let the lead drop below 11 points and got it to 20 with 7:26 remaining.

SU placed four players in double figures with Womack, Sanders and Joia Davis all leading the way with 11. Sophomore Netagia Foreman rounded out this group with 10.

Sarah Flanagan paced UMW with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
