WINCHESTER, Va. - Catholic University used a strong start to the second half Thursday afternoon to propel the Cardinals to a 3-1 non-league men's soccer victory over host Shenandoah in the season opener for both schools.

Leading 1-0 after a Bryan Seifarth goal in the 24th minute, Catholic (1-0) got what proved to be the game winner just 17 seconds into the second half. Erik Wyche received a pass off of the second half tap, dribbled to just outside the 18-yard box and blistered his shot into the upper right hand corner of the net.

Eight minutes later, sophomore Jace Kenny answered for the Hornets (0-1) when he redirected a Mohamed Toure corner kick, but SU could not get the equalizer.

Nine minutes after Kenny brought the hosts to within the single goal, Colin Crawford added an unassisted insurance goal for Catholic.

CUA outshot Shenandoah just 10-9, but had 12 of the game's 16 corner kicks.

SU keeper Chris Peter had three saves in just over 70 minutes of action.
