WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Ferrum College earned an important USA South Conference women's soccer victory over host Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 league win.
The win puts Ferrum (5-7, 2-2 USA South) in the drivers seat for a post-season conference tournament berth, while Shenandoah (2-12, 1-5 USA South) now needs to win its two remaining conference contests.
The lone goal of the game came in the 74th minute when Corinne Musanti converted a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box. Musanti blasted the kick into the upper corner past the outstretched arms of Hornets keeperÂ
Lauren Elliott. Â
Musanti would have another chance for FC minutes later on another free kick, but saw her shot sail just over the crossbar.
SU had its best chance to score just over 20 minutes into the contest when Panthers goal keeper Sarah Hutzler came out to receive a ball near the 18-yard box, but saw Hornets freshmanÂ
Karissa Castillo corral the loose ball and carry in the ball deep into the box. Unfortunately for the home fans, a Ferrum defender came out and poked the ball away.
FC out shot Shenandoah 6 to 5 on the afternoon and took all five of the game's corner kicks. Â
Elliott finished the game with two saves and Hutzler had three.
Box ScoreÂ
SU is back in Wednesday afternoon against Wilson College in a non-league contest.
