Volleyball Sweptin Tri-Match

DANVILLE, Va. - League leading Averett University and traditional power Greensboro used a pair of dominating hitting performances Friday afternoon to sweep visiting Shenandoah 3-0 in USA South Conference volleyball action.

Averett (23-5, 10-0 USA South) hit .389 for the match as it downed the Hornets 30-18, 30-12, 30-12.

Greensboro (21-9, 8-2) then hit .346 in taking a 30-26, 30-17, 30-17 decision in the second match of the day.

The middle game was the best of the three in the opener for AU; they had 21 kills and just five errors in 30 attempts for a .533 attack percentage.

Shenandoah (12-11, 2-9), which was missing junior Jennifer Thompson due to graduate school class requirements, hit .161 over the three-game match against Averett and then .118 against the Lady Pride.

Sophomore Jennie Haywood, who normally plays libero, had the Hornets best percentage with three kills and zero errors in six attempts against AU. Freshman Jessi Johnson had a team-high four kills.

Three players, Christy Renegar, Jordan Maupin and Kris Dunn, had 10 kills each for the hosts.

Freshman Tina Conner had a team-high 11 kills against Greensboro, but 16 errors in 93 attempts spelled doom for the Hornets upset chances. Junior Michelle Chandler was the only other player to register double digit stats - she had 11 assists.

Defending USA South Conference Player of the Year Lauren Smith paced GC with 14 kills.
