WINCHESTER, Va. - Christopher Newport University scored a late goal to propel the Captains to a 2-1 USA South Conference men's soccer victory over host Shenandoah Wednesday afternoon.
CNU (8-4, 3-0 USA South) scored both of its goals off of direct kicks following fouls called on the Hornets (0-7-2, 0-1-1). Derek Shaw scored what proved to the game-winner in the 87th minute when he knocked in a direct kick from 25 yards out past diving SU keeperÂ
Brian Garretson.
The Captains needed Shaw's late tally as Shenandoah tied the contest at 1-1 just over nine minutes into the second half. JuniorÂ
Jared Flemingserved a ball into the box, where a CNU defender deflected it in for an own goal.Â

The hosts had a two excellent opportunities following the own goal to take the lead, but missed on a crossing attempt and sawÂ

Christopher Newport scored the initial goal of the contest in the 27th minute in much the same manner that they scored the game-winner. Awarded a direct kick near midfield, Daniel Fogerty served it into Shawn Trueblood on the doorstep where he ripped his shot past Garretson.
CNU outshot the Hornets 12-11 and the two teams split eight corners.
