Volleyball Victorious in USA South Opener

WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University opened its USA South Conference volleyball season with a victory for the third time in four years Friday night with a 3-0 sweep over visiting NC Wesleyan.

Shenandoah (4-2, 1-0 USA South) blitzed the Lady Bishops (4-7, 0-1) 30-24, 30-19, 30-15 to open the conference slate for the victory for the second time in coach Sarah Pelster's three seasons. SU had opened Pelster's first year with a 3-1 win over Ferrum before losing 3-0 at NC Wesleyan last year.

Junior Michelle Chandler led the Hornets with 17 kills and 15 assists while classmate Jennifer Thompson added 12 kills and a team-high 23 assists. Thompson also had 13 digs to give her a school record fifth straight triple-double.

April Wilson had 11 kills and Caitlin George 24 assists for NCWC.

Both teams are in action twice tomorrow as Shenandoah hosts a USA South volleyball quad. SU faces Greensboro at 11:30 a.m. and Averett at 7:00 p.m. while NC Wesleyan takes on Greensboro at 2:00 p.m. and Averett at 4:30 p.m.
