Men Snap Losing Streak

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's soccer team snapped its five-game losing streak to start the season with a 0-0 tie against Southern Virginia Wednesday afternoon.

The Hornets (0-5-1) battled the Knights (0-6-1) to a scoreless draw through the 90 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime despite having to play a man-down for the final 57:07.

SU was forced into the deficit situation after freshman Nick Gonzalezwas sent off for a hard tackle in the 53rd minute. The Hornets continued to press the action against SVU after the foul, and outshot their opponents 28-9 for the contest.

Shenandoah had over half of its shots, 15, after the red card was issued. However, Knights goalkeeper Dustin Jensen made 17 saves to keep his side in the game.

SU keeper Brian Garretson celebrated his 20th birthday in style; he had six saves to register his first career shutout.

The Hornets open USA South Conference play on Saturday against Greensboro College. This game is the back-end of a doubleheader with the women and is scheduled for a 2:30 start.
