WINCHESTER, Va. - Shenandoah University scored the first two goals of its 2006 field hockey opener Thursday afternoon and held on for a 2-1 non-league victory over visiting Hood College.

Senior Kelly Matagiese tallied off of a Jenn Iuliano assist exactly five minutes into the second half before Jen Franco, Matagiese' high school classmate, added an insurance goal 11 minutes later.

Franco scored what proved to be the game-winner when she re-directed a Matagiese cross from right on the doorstep and gave the hosts a commanding two-goal advantage.

Hood (0-1) answered at 63:04 with a Steph Holman goal, but SU keeper Wendy Taylor came up with a point blank save in the 68th minute to preserve the victory.

Taylor had two saves in each half while Blazers keeper Ashley Saylor posted five.
