WINCHESTER, Va. - Methodist University scored one goal early and another late to escape with a 2-1 USA South Conference men's soccer victory over host Shenandoah Friday afternoon.
The same two players scored for Methodist (8-6, 2-2 USA South) in the win over the Hornets (3-13, 0-4).
In the seventh minute, Mike Demara threaded a cross in front of the SU goal to Evan Monteiro, who was able to redirect the ball past Shenandoah keeperÂ
Brian Garretson.
After Shenandoah tied it on aÂ
David Winskill goal off of a direct kick in the 80th minute, the Monarchs clinched the game with just under two minutes remaining.
Demara once again beat the defense before crossing the ball to Monteiro, who put shot away for the game-winning goal.
Winskill scored the equalizer with just over 10 minutes remaining when he bent a 25-yard free kick around the visitors wall and into the upper left-hand corner of the net.
With barely 90 seconds remaining, Shenandoah mounted a furious attack on the MU goal in an attempt to get the tying goal. The hosts were able to earn two corners in the final minute, and Methodist keeper Sean Brennan used all of his 6'6" frame to turn aside anÂ
Aaron McGuinessbullet in the waning seconds.
Garretson finished the game with three saves and Brennan two.
