ASHLAND, Va. - Shenandoah University dug itself out of huge hole Thursday afternoon in its non-league baseball game against Randolph-Macon, but could not finish the job in a 9-8 loss to the Yellow Jackets.
Shenandoah (7-5) found itself down 4-0 after two innings and 8-2 after three, but rallied to tie R-MC (11-4-1) as the game headed to the bottom of the ninth.
Unfortunately for the visitors, Macon got a two-out walk-off home run from rightfielder J.C. Conway to end it. Conway, who finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, took SU senior
Daniel Bowers deep for his second home run of the game.
Bowers, the fifth Hornets pitcher of the game, took the loss after allowing one run on two hits against one strikeout in 1.1 innings. He is 0-1 this spring.
With the six-run deficit, Shenandoah got itself back into it by scoring three runs in the sixth and two in the eighth before tying it in the top of the ninth.
Senior
David Jenkins provided the big blow in the sixth by hitting a three-run home run, his first of the year, to score
Ryan Anderson and
Adam Kessel.
Kessel continued his hot hitting by going 4-for-5 with two doubles and a run batted in.
Dillon Sheads (2-0) allowed an unearned run in the top of the ninth, but got the win when Conway hit the walk-off solo shot. Sheads allowed two hits in 1.2 innings of work.
