WINCHESTER, Va. - No. 9 in the nation Christopher Newport University used a big second half Sunday afternoon to pull away from host Shenandoah in a 6-0 non-league field hockey victory.
The Captains (6-1) scored all of the goals they would need on a Ashley Traylor tally off of Haylie Black's assist 82 seconds before halftime, and then added five more goals following the break.
Shenandoah (0-5) was held to just one shot in the game, and CNU came up with a defensive save to preserve the shutout.
Christopher Newport complemented that defensive effort by taking 17 shots, including 13 in the second half. They also held a 14-2 advantage in penalty corners.
SU goalieÂ
Chelsea Smith made eight saves in the losing effort.
