WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Christopher Newport University kept its USA South Conference volleyball record perfect Wednesday night with a 3-0 victory over host Shenandoah.
After a relatively slow start, CNU (13-5, 9-0 USA South) pulled away to win 30-17, 30-24, 30-15 over the Hornets (6-9, 0-7).
Shenandoah actually led 12-11 in the opening game before the Captains reeled off a 19-6 run to finish off their hosts. Eight of those points came with libero Christie Kirby at the service line - her run was finally snapped on an attack error by Ellen Koch.
Leading 21-14 at this point, CNU coasted to the opening game win.
The Hornets again hung with the Captains in the second game and found themselves tied at 12-12 following aÂ
Jennifer Thompson kill. Unfortunately for the hosts, CNU scored the game's next four points and did not trail again.
Thompson led the Hornets with 10 kills, while Christopher Newport had seven women register at least five each.
The Captains were also especially effective from the service line. They had 20 aces on the night, including four from Ryann Lowery, Sarah Coffey and Caitlyn Jansen.
