BALTIMORE, Md. - Another game, another overtime victory for the
SU women's field hockey team.
For the fourth time this season and for the third time in four
games, Shenandoah University earned a non-conference field hockey
win in extra time Thursday afternoon with a 2-1 win over the
College of Notre Dame (Md.).
Sophomore Casey
Hertel netted the game-winner for the Hornets (5-3) in the
78th minute and in the process allowed the team to set a new school
record for wins in a season.
The fifth win, and fourth in overtime, breaks the previous mark
of four wins set in 2004.
Hertel's goal, off of a failed clear by CND (1-7) keeper Jessica
Maier, broke a 1-1 deadlock.
After junior Kaitlin
Sommer had opened the scoring for SU in the 61st minute,
the Gators tied it with just over two minutes to play in
regulation.
Shenandoah, which outshot its hosts 14-5 and had a 6-4 advantage
in penalty corners, did not flinch in the sudden-victory OT. The
Hornets took three of the first five shots of the extra session
before Hertel ended it at 77:39.
SU keeper Danielle
Lawson had five saves in the win.
Shenandoah returns to action on Saturday at 3 with home MAC
Commonwealth game against Arcadia.
