Panthers Rally over Football

WINCHESTER, Va. - Ferrum College used the second of a pair of quick strike scoring drives Saturday night to rally for a 19-13 USA South Conference victory over host Shenandoah.

The win is the fifth straight for the Panthers (4-3, 2-2 USA South) in the longtime series between the two schools.

For SU (1-6, 0-4 USA South), it is the sixth straight game that it has lost by less than nine points.

Nursing a 13-9 lead as the fourth quarter dawned, Shenandoah gave up the advantage as Ferrum took just two plays to drive 60 yards for the go-ahead score. Steven Harris, who was part of an FC offense that gained 347 yards on the ground, went gained 52 of those yards on a first down option run.

Harris led all rushers with 122 yards on 11 carries while Quintel Banks added 112 on 14.

Brandon Hayes, playing in place of the suspended Keone Kyle, had 97 yards on 21 carries for Shenandoah.

The Hornets fumbled the ball right back to the Panthers on the ensuing possession, but the SU defense held and Ferrum was forced to settle for a 26-yard Scott Puschell field goal.

Shenandoah had taken a 13-9 lead into the halftime lockerroom when Anthony Cordero completed a 10-play, 65-yard drive with a 3-yard run at the 3:56 mark of the second.

Cordero's TD, his sixth of the season, capped a first half that saw the two teams trade four scores.

FC opened the game by going 62 yards in just three plays before Shenandoah answered right back with a 5-play, 64-yard drive on its first possession.

Both teams failed on their respective PAT attempts - Puschell missed for the Panthers and Cory Gay's was blocked following a Vern Lunsford to Rico Wallace 40-yard TD strike with 10:58 remaining in the first.

The Panthers had a 360 to 272 yard advantage in total offense and SU won the time of possession battle 31:58 to 28:02.
