WINCHESTER, Va. - Visiting Frostburg State snapped a five-game
road losing streak to Shenandoah with a 75-73 overtime victory over
the Hornets Monday evening in the opening game of the 2009-10
season for both teams.
The Bobcats (1-0) scored the first four points of overtime and
never trailed in the extra session to down the Hornets (0-1).
Shenandoah had an opportunity to tie it at the end of OT,
but Chris
Schrader and Mitchell Dudley
each missed shots from the paint and Dudley's final attempt glanced
off the front rim as time expired.
The Hornets suffered through a 13 for 27 night at the charity
stripe that made the Bobcats job easier - SU missed 8 of 15
attempts in the second half of play including four straight at one
point.
Trailing by three in the waning minutes of OT, junior Kevin Kline had a
chance to tie it when he was fouled attempting a three-pointer from
the corner. Unfortunately for the capacity crowd at Shingleton
Gymnasium, Kline missed his second and third attempts, which led to
a Schrader rebound and the final flurry of shots from the paint.
Kline led all scorers in the game with a career-high 28 points
on 11 of 15 shooting and he sent the game into overtime with a
turnaround jumper over a double-team with seven seconds remaining.
He finished his night at the line 6-for-13.
Frostburg, which trailed by nine points by the 11:17 mark of the
first, got back in it with a 21-9 run to end the first half.
The two teams then traded the lead six times and were tied on
four other occasions in the second before Kline hit the final
bucket of regulation.
After SU fumbled the overtime tip out-of-bounds, Busha hit that
jumper in the paint and the visitors never trailed again.
In additon Kline's 28, Dudley had 12 points and 11 points in his
first game in a Hornets uniform.
Terrance Taylor led a group of four FSU players in
double-figures with 25 points and 11 boards. Frostburg held a 45-39
advantage on the glass.
Shenandoah is back in action Wednesday night at Eastern
Mennonite.
